第25回（2025年度）研究助成セミナーのお知らせ

研究助成委員会では、主に若い研究者の方々に向けたセミナーを毎年開催しております。今年度は古英詩がご専門であるOxford大学のRafael Pascual先生を講師にお招きし、韻律と校訂についてお話しいただきます。本セミナーは、参加者の皆さまが幅広い視点で中世という世界を考えられることを目標としています。

5. 概要：
This lecture addresses the long-standing editorial debate over the problem of textual authority in Old English verse. Since the nineteenth century, when classical philology provided the dominant model, two contrasting schools of thought have framed the discussion: a liberal one, favouring emendation and sceptical of scribal reliability, and a conservative one, inclined to preserve the transmitted text even when problematic. The controversy, while seemingly technical, raises fundamental questions: How far can metre serve as a guide to emendation? To what extent should we trust the scribes who copied the poetry?

After surveying the historical development of the debate—from Kemble and Lachmann’s liberal confidence to the conservatism of editors such as Wyatt, Chambers, and Doane—I will examine cases where conservative caution is warranted but also where scribal error can scarcely be denied. Particular attention will be given to evidence from the few Old English poems that survive in more than one manuscript version. As comparison of parallel texts reveals, metrically irregular or alliteratively defective lines in one witness are often regular in another, thereby confirming the validity of Sieversian metrics as a tool for textual criticism.

Building on this evidence, I will propose several new emendations to problematic passages in poems such as Guthlac A and Judgment Day II. The lecture will close with a brief excursus on Old Norse and Middle English alliterative verse, suggesting that questions of scribal authority and metrical regularity are not confined to Old English, but form part of a wider Germanic and medieval poetic tradition.
